From Chapter 4
The Counterfeit Explorer
“For nearly every genuine human good, there is a counterfeit that resembles it closely enough to be mistaken for the real thing.”
A counterfeit is convincing for a simple reason: the feeling is real.
“The pleasure, excitement, satisfaction, affection, or relief we feel may be entirely genuine.”
What differs is something the feeling can’t show you on its own.
“What distinguishes the genuine from the counterfeit is not the intensity of the feeling, but its source and what it produces.”

What it truly gives
Closeness, affection, devotion — real and good.
What we ask of it
For another person to make us feel whole or worthy.
What that produces
“When we depend on another person to make us feel whole or worthy, love can become entangled with fear, possessiveness, jealousy, or the constant need for reassurance.”
“The distinction is whether we appreciate these things for what they are or depend on them to provide what they cannot.”
Seven pairs, one pattern. In each, something good was asked to give what it cannot — and beneath each, the same need.
“God's love is the only thing capable of satisfying the deepest need for which the human organism was created. Everything else, however good, falls short when we ask it to take His place.”
